Global struggles against water privatization have advanced over the years. Protests have been launched in a number of towns, cities, municipalities – proof of the growing concern and commitment to stop corporate control over water resources. But these are continuously being threatened with aggressive attempts by water TNCs to further liberalize public utilities, water services included. If left unchecked and unopposed, these moves shall run contradictory to the Millennium Development Goals which state, among other things, that the world shall have 50% less people without sustainable access to safe drinking water. |

Mexico City – Filipino water activists from the Water for the People Network (WPN) joined some 10,000 protestors from different countries to condemn the global corporate drive to control and privatize the world's water as the biennial World Water Forum (WWF) opened today in this city. Chanting "Agua si, Foro no!" (Water yes, Forum no!), the protestors denounced the WWF as another offensive of transnational corporations (TNCs) and international financial institutions (IFIs) to legitimize and intensify water privatization. |

President Gloria Arroyo, who has yet to overcome the worst political crisis of her regime, is risking further isolation from the people if she would allow the planned reprivatization of the Maynilad Water Services Inc. The Water for the People Network (WPN) issued the statement as residents from Maynilad areas trooped to the main office of the water firm where it is holding its annual stockholders’ meeting. |
